BaoActive range extension
I was quite excited for the first packaging brief since I’d had some experience in the field and thought it would be an opportunity to apply things I knew, and was also being briefed by the lecturer that got me interested in the field years ago. But this pushed me to use materials I hadn’t touched in a long time and allowed for some creative exploration.
Digitizing hand drawn illustrations of the ingredients in the product; baobab, moringa and hibiscus was a good exercise in composition and form. The challenge in this brief was to create something that would be a range extension to a product that was already in stores. This meant that care needed to be taken for the colour choices and line treatment of the illustrations so that it would align with the current brand identity.
It was a unique creative outlet to explore mark-making with different materials in unique ways since I had mostly focused on simple paint and linework before. This tasked called for a more expressive approach with bolder uses of charcoal, inks, pastels and I even tried some wood-carved prints. I found a lot of joy in simply spending time with the materials and allowing my creativity to flow freely and the physical part of the project made the digital portion much more engaging.
The process of the media exploration to the digitizing, editing and placement on a mock-up was fulfilling since we worked on it from start to finish and got to develop skills at each level. I found it particularly helpful to consult with Lodi Paul and Bruce Snaddon in gaining a direction and then implementing their guidance for a result I was happy with.
